Driving through Alexander Valley, one can’t help but admire the rolling landscape adorned with ever changing shades of brilliant greens. Covering the framework of this scene is of course acres of grape vines in full summer growth. Lush, complete canopies run through the trellises as far as the eye can see and surround the Stryker Sonoma Estate beautifully. Recently we had the opportunity to take a walk through our vineyards, and follow the self-guided tour we have for visitors to our tasting room. All of us were anxious to get started as we looked over the map, eager to see the vines.
The first stop on the tour takes you to the sign from the Sonoma County Wine Grape Commission at the upper fountain, welcoming guests to the estate. From here you turn toward the entrance and proceed down from the crest of the road, taking in the view of all the vineyards. It’s breathtaking to be able to have such a panoramic view. Guests stroll down the road to the first set of vines, noting from the guide map that it was Cabernet Sauvignon. On this adventure you will be able to compare the different leaf and canopy growth patterns of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Tannat, and Petite Sirah; all of which are made into delicious estate wines. Being able to see these vines up close is a real treat, you are really able examine the subtle differences between each varietal from the structure of the leaf to the rootstalk and even the cover crops planted in between the rows. On this vineyard adventure we took fellow intern Lucy along for the vineyard tour, she “had no idea you could plant different varietals all within the immediate location and not affect the berries in their development.”
Visitors complete the tour with a grand view of both the 93 year old estate old vine Zinfandel and the estate as a whole. All one needs is a chase lounge chair and a glass of the Semillon and you will be in a state of complete bliss. Come join us at Stryker Sonoma for an exciting tasting and tour of our estate, highlighting the natural beauty of our surroundings complemented by our premiere wines. ~ Chris
